HEALTHCARE APPLICATION
PLASMAIR for hospitals, clinics and ASSTs
Fully automatic 24/7 decontamination for critical healthcare environments. Designed for operating theatres, ISO-classified rooms, sterile preparation areas and controlled healthcare environments. Continuous environmental monitoring, ISO 14644-1:2022 compliance and validated bacterial load reduction above 95%.
Airborne multidrug‑resistant bacteria: MRSA, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, can survive in the air for hours. Traditional HEPA filters do not remove particles < 0.3 µm. Cold SDBD plasma does.
Traditional filtration captures contaminants.
PLASMAIR adds active microbial inactivation through cold SDBD plasma technology.
THE PROBLEM
Airborne pathogens in healthcare environments
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain one of the leading causes of hospital complications in Europe. Airborne microbial contamination is recognised as a major risk factor in operating theatres and controlled healthcare environments.
Airborne microorganisms may be transported through microparticles in the 0.1–0.5 μm range, one of the most difficult fractions for traditional mechanical filtration systems.
Multidrug-resistant bacteria — including MRSA, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii — represent a growing public health concern. These pathogens may survive for extended periods in air, on surfaces and within ventilation systems.
Mechanical filtration alone may not be sufficient in critical healthcare environments.
PLASMAIR integrates controlled cold SDBD plasma technology generating reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) for continuous microbial load reduction in air and on exposed surfaces. These reactive species contribute to microbial inactivation through oxidative stress mechanisms affecting bacterial cell membranes, proteins and viral surface structures.
During occupied daytime operation, the system maintains ozone concentrations within European exposure limits while continuously reducing microbial load.
| BACTERIUM AND RISK | INCIDENCE AND CONTEXT |
|---|---|
| Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) - High | ~30% surgical infections |
| Klebsiella pneumoniae - High | ~10.4% HAI |
| Pseudomonas aeruginosa - High | ~8.1% HAI |
| Acinetobacter baumannii - Critical | Lethality 17–46% |
| Clostridioides difficile - High | ~12% HAI |
| Aspergillus spp. (spores) - High | Immunocompromised patients |

STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE
UNI EN ISO 14644-1:2022
The UNI EN ISO 14644‑1:2022 standard, in force since 2022, has updated and tightened requirements for cleanrooms and controlled environments in healthcare. PLASMAIR has been designed to meet, and exceed, all required parameters.
The standard defines air cleanliness classes based on particle concentration per cubic metre. Operating theatres generally require class ISO 5 (above the surgical field) and ISO 7/8 (for the room).
Multidrug‑resistant bacteria, MRSA, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, are now a major public health emergency. They survive on surfaces and in the air for hours, days, weeks. Cleaning and mechanical filtration alone are not sufficient.
PLASMAIR acts where traditional systems stop: it generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) that, through oxidative stress mechanisms, inactivate bacterial cell membranes and viral receptors at ozone concentrations that are safe for staff.
