OUR STORY
Da un problema urgente a una tecnologia brevettata
Four key milestones in eight years of research, development and field validation.
2017 — The beginning
The birth of PoloPlasma
After many years facing the long‑standing issue of hospital microbiological contamination, especially in operating rooms, and the ongoing problem of healthcare‑associated infections (HAI), at the end of 2017 PoloPlasma S.r.l. was founded as an innovative start‑up.
Together with several colleagues and friends, the idea took shape: to develop an automatic decontamination system capable of tackling this problem, based on a cold plasma process applied to ambient air, at low pressure and temperature, with a dynamic behavior differing between day and night and with a process that is technically effective, repeatable and safe.

2018–2020 — Research and development
First development with the university and first field experience
The initial development stemmed from a collaboration with the University of Milano‑Bicocca, Institute of Physics, and the University of Milan, Institute of Microbiology. This was followed by an initial validation in an ISO 8 pharmaceutical industrial cleanroom, with excellent results in combination with the existing ventilation system.
2021–2024 — Exploration and strategic focus
Experience in various industrial and pharmaceutical sectors
Several prototypes were built and used to explore three application areas: decontamination in the hospital‑healthcare sector, food preservation in modified‑atmosphere chambers and sterilization in pharmaceutical isolators and sterilizers for surgical instruments.
The experience gained led to concentrating all research on hospital decontamination in surgical theatres and on dry sterility, with the food sector being phased out.
The strategic decision to focus on hospital decontamination in operating rooms proved decisive for the development of PLASMAIR.

PLASMAIR is born: TRL9 prototype installed at Ce.Me.Di. in Turin (Lifenet Group)
Through a collaboration between PoloPlasma and Ssprogetti, Futura Innovazione was founded, securing public funding for the development of the hospital project and for the Italian distribution of the product, which was given the name PLASMAIR.
The pre‑commercial TRL9 prototype was installed in a surgical theatre. Two patents were obtained covering the decontamination and sterilization processes, protecting the original process. The procedure to obtain CE marking was launched in order to begin commercialization.

The latest TRL9 prototype operated for 6 consecutive months, 24/7, in a non‑classified surgical theatre, achieving ISO 7 classification at the Ce.Me.Di. outpatient clinic in Turin, with a reduction of −85% in bacterial load and −50% in airborne particles.
